A leaking shower rarely stays a shower problem for long. What starts as a damp patch on silicone, a loose tile or water on the bathroom floor can turn into hidden damage in walls, ceilings and subfloors. If water appears outside the enclosure after every shower, start by looking at the obvious points of escape. Check the silicone line where the tray meets the wall, the vertical seals on the screen, and the threshold around doors and frames. If these areas are split, lifting, mould-stained or missing in sections, they may no longer be watertight.

Then there are plumbing faults. A leaking valve, shower waste, riser rail fixing or concealed connection can mimic a sealing issue. When a shower leak can be fixed with resealing
Resealing is the right solution when the tray, enclosure and wall finishes are still sound, and the water is escaping through failed joints. In those cases, the old silicone needs to be fully removed, the surfaces properly cleaned and dried, and a new sanitary-grade sealant applied with clean, continuous lines.
This is where workmanship matters. Applying new sealant over old residue, mould, soap film or damp edges usually leads to early failure. A clean finish is part of the job, but performance comes first. A seal must be bonded correctly, tooled properly, and installed in the right joint depth and profile.
There is also a difference between a cosmetic touch-up and a proper reseal. If sections have debonded, if mould is embedded behind the sealant, or if multiple joints have failed, patching one small gap is unlikely to solve the wider problem. A full removal and replacement is normally the better approach.
When resealing will not solve it
If the tray moves when stepped on, resealing alone is unlikely to last. The same applies if tiles are loose, grout is cracked across multiple areas, backing boards have deteriorated, or water has already reached structural materials. In these situations, the leak is not just about the sealant line. The assembly itself is compromised.
A similar issue arises with badly installed enclosures. If water is being driven through unsealed profiles, incorrect fall angles, poorly fixed channels or weak corner details, the repair may involve adjustment or partial refitting rather than just new silicone.
It depends on the condition of the shower as a whole. A high-quality reseal can deliver an excellent long-term result, but only when the surrounding surfaces are stable and suitable for sealing.
What to check before deciding on a repair
Start with the tray and enclosure. Does the tray feel solid underfoot, or is there movement? Are the screen fixings secure? Do doors close properly without forcing water towards the outside edge? Small alignment issues can create repeat leaks.
Next, inspect the wall joints and corners. Look for blackened silicone, gaps, lifting edges and splits at stress points. Then check grout lines for cracking, missing sections or signs of moisture retention. If tiles sound hollow or move slightly when pressed, there may be failure behind the surface.
Also pay attention to where the water shows up. If the floor outside the shower is wet immediately after use, the leak is probably at enclosure or tray level. If damp appears later, or in neighbouring rooms, water may be tracking behind finishes.

The long-term fix is usually a combination of correct diagnosis, proper preparation and the right sealant system for the environment. Wet areas need products suited to regular moisture exposure and movement, not a general filler or a rushed bead applied as a temporary barrier.
Surface preparation is critical. Existing silicone must be removed cleanly. Contamination has to be dealt with. Any mould growth needs proper treatment. Most importantly, joints must be dry and stable before new material is applied. Good sealant on a poor substrate is still a poor repair.
