
How to Reseal a Shower Tray Without Leaks

A dark line of mould or a split in the silicone around a shower tray is not just a cosmetic issue. Water can track behind failed sealant, damage surrounding finishes and create persistent damp problems below or beside the shower. Knowing how to reseal a shower tray correctly means dealing with the cause of failure as well as replacing the visible bead.
A clean, continuous silicone joint allows the tray, wall tiles and enclosure to move slightly without opening a route for water. Rush the preparation or seal a tray that is still moving excessively, and the new sealant may fail far sooner than it should.
When a shower tray needs resealing
Resealing is usually required when silicone has cracked, lifted from the tile or tray, become badly stained, or developed mould that will not clean away. Gaps at the corners, a bead that feels loose when lightly pressed, and water marks on the ceiling below are more urgent warning signs.
Do not assume silicone is the only problem. A tray that flexes underfoot, loose wall tiles, a leaking waste connection, damaged grout, or an enclosure frame that has not been sealed correctly can all allow water to escape. New silicone will improve neither a moving tray nor a plumbing leak. Check these points before starting.
What you need before you start
For a straightforward shower tray reseal, use a sharp sealant removal tool or knife, a plastic scraper, mould remover, clean cloths, isopropyl alcohol or an appropriate surface cleaner, masking tape, a quality sanitary silicone and a sealant gun. A profiling tool can help create a neater, consistent finish.
Choose a neutral-cure sanitary silicone designed for bathrooms and wet areas. It should offer mould resistance and strong adhesion to the materials around the joint. Do not use decorators' caulk: it is not suitable for a permanently wet connection and will fail quickly.
Check the silicone is compatible with the tray material. Acrylic, stone-resin, ceramic and metal trays can have different manufacturer requirements, particularly where a tray has a specialist surface coating. If in doubt, confirm the specification before applying anything.
How to reseal a shower tray step by step
1. Stop using the shower and dry the area
The shower tray, tiles and enclosure must be fully dry. Avoid using the shower for at least 24 hours before removal if there is a chance water has worked behind the old sealant. Dry visible surfaces thoroughly, then leave the bathroom ventilated.
This matters because silicone can appear to stick to a damp surface but lose adhesion at the edges once the area is used again. A dry, stable joint gives the new seal the best chance of performing properly.
2. Remove every trace of failed silicone
Cut carefully along both edges of the existing bead, taking care not to scratch the tray or chip the tile glaze. Pull away the main strip, then use a scraper and silicone remover where necessary to clear the remaining residue.
This is the stage most likely to determine the final result. New silicone does not reliably bond to old silicone, even if the old material looks sound in places. Leave residue behind and the new bead can peel away along the joint.
Work methodically around the tray, including corners and the areas where the enclosure meets the wall or tray. If the enclosure has separate manufacturer-designed seals, do not remove or block drainage channels in its frame.
3. Clean, treat and prepare the joint
Remove mould with a suitable bathroom mould treatment, following the product instructions. Then clean away soap residue, limescale and silicone remover. Finish by wiping the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol or a residue-free cleaner and allow them to dry completely.
The joint needs to be clean enough for silicone to bond directly to the tray and tile, not to shampoo film or cleaner residue. A clean cloth should come away without discolouration before you move on.
4. Check for movement before sealing
Stand carefully in the dry tray and assess whether it moves, creaks or drops noticeably. Minor movement is normal in many installations and is one reason silicone is used. Significant flexing, however, points to poor support beneath the tray or an installation issue that should be resolved first.
If the tray is stable, fill it with water before applying silicone. The weight helps settle the tray into its working position, reducing the risk of the joint being pulled apart when it is first used. This is particularly worthwhile with acrylic trays. Do not overfill it or leave it unattended.
5. Mask for a clean, controlled line
Apply masking tape on the tile and tray to define the finished edges of the bead. Keep the tape lines parallel and allow enough width for a practical seal, rather than trying to apply a very thin line that cannot accommodate movement.
Masking takes a few extra minutes but makes a substantial difference to the finish. It is especially useful where white silicone meets dark tiles, textured surfaces or a tray that already has slight staining at the joint line.
6. Apply the silicone in one continuous pass
Cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle, starting with a smaller opening than you think you need. Apply steady pressure to the gun and run one continuous bead along each straight section. Keep the nozzle moving at a consistent speed so the bead fills the gap without excessive build-up.
Avoid stopping and starting halfway along a wall where possible. A continuous bead is easier to tool and has fewer weak points. For corners, ensure the silicone meets cleanly without leaving a pinhole or thin section.
7. Tool the bead, then remove the tape promptly
Tool the silicone immediately with a profiling tool or a lightly moistened finishing tool. The aim is a smooth, slightly concave bead that makes full contact with both surfaces. Pressing too hard can leave the joint too thin; using too much water or washing-up liquid can interfere with the finish.
Remove the masking tape straight away, pulling it back over itself at an angle. Do this before the silicone skins over. Inspect the joint from different angles and correct any small gaps immediately with a little more silicone, then tool it again.
Allow proper curing time
Do not use the shower until the silicone has cured for the period stated by the manufacturer. Many sanitary silicones need at least 24 hours before exposure to water, but temperature, humidity and bead depth can extend this. In a cool Scottish bathroom with limited ventilation, allowing longer is sensible.
Keep the room ventilated during curing, but avoid directing very hot air at the fresh joint. Once cured, inspect the bead after the first few showers. Water should run into the tray, with no pooling at the edge and no sign of lifting.
Common mistakes that cause early sealant failure
The most common mistake is applying new silicone over old material. Others include sealing onto damp or contaminated surfaces, using unsuitable sealant, making the bead too narrow, and using the shower before curing is complete.
Another issue is sealing around an enclosure without understanding its drainage design. Some shower screens are intended to be sealed externally but not internally at the bottom, allowing any water within the frame to drain back into the tray. Sealing both sides can trap water and create a leak that appears elsewhere. Check the enclosure instructions before applying silicone around the frame.
When to call a specialist
A domestic reseal can be manageable where the tray is solid, the old silicone removes cleanly and there is no evidence of water damage.
